For the second consecutive year, World of Books has appeared in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100. The list, which is produced annually in association with Virgin, recognises the 100 fastest growing businesses in the UK.
This year World of Books were 94th, with everyone from Norwich City Football Club to the independent Scottish brewers BrewDog, appearing in what is always a wide-ranging list.
It is a fantastic honour to be included once again and to join the few companies to appear in consecutive editions. But of course none of it would be possible without our fantastic customers, who continue to come back to us time and again to buy great value second-hand books. So thank you to everyone who has used World of Books this year, in the past or plan to in the future.
How it all Works
The listings are calculated on the percentage growth of each business over a three year period. If you have ever read our blogs, newsletters or anything else for that matter, you will have probably be all too aware of how things have changed at World of Books in recent times. Today we employ over 350 people, stock 2 million books and sell a title every five seconds. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t always that way.
Today we are able to do more within the community, helping to support local events as well as our partner charity – Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. But once upon a time we had a single, small warehouse, a skeleton staff and stock that could be measured in tens of thousands, rather than millions.
The majority of our books are still purchased from the surplus stock of charities too. Any that aren’t sold or are in a poor condition when they arrive are recycled to ensure that they can go to good use elsewhere. So while the scale of the operation has increased greatly, we still have the same principles that helped us to get off the ground five years ago.
Thank you again to everyone who has helped to make this fantastic growth possible and we hope to see you back at World of Books in 2014 and beyond.
